Choosing yourself first isn't selfish — it's the beginning of everything

There's a particular kind of bravery in saying: I'm not going to wait for a partner to begin my life. This is the story of what happens after that sentence.

For most of our lives we're handed a quiet script: meet someone, build a life together, then — if it's in the plan — become a mother.

Choosing solo motherhood by choice is the moment a woman gently puts that script down and writes her own.

It isn't a backup. It isn't plan B. It's a chosen path — one made with love, intention and a clear-eyed look at the life she actually wants to live.

There is grief inside the decision, too.

Grief for the version of motherhood you once imagined. Grief for the partner who didn't arrive on the timeline you hoped for. Grief, sometimes, for the people in your life who can't yet meet you where you are.

But underneath the grief is something steadier: a knowing. A sense that this is yours. That waiting any longer would mean betraying something you can feel in your body.

Choosing yourself first isn't turning away from love. It's the deepest act of love you can offer the child you're calling in — to come home to a mother who already chose them, fully, before they ever arrived.

You are not doing this alone because no one wanted you. You are doing this because you wanted them.

And that is the most extraordinary place to begin.
